The Cafe Femenino program which started in 2004 in Peru is now going to Africa. This is a great accomplishment for the Organic and Fair Trade Coffee Producers. Rwanda will be the first country in Africa to embrace and start a Cafe Femenino coffee Coop. My Roaster, and I are so excited to now have a Cafe Femenino coffee from Africa. This will allow us to create all of the current coffee blends in our line with 100% Cafe Femenino coffees. For instance, we will create a Cafe Femenino Espresso now! This allows us to support these women producers and there families. When we sell more Cafe Femenino coffee, we donate more to Women’s shelters here and advance women and there families in coffee producing countries.

Health Benefits of Coffee

The Coffee Association of Canada points out that coffee is a safe and natural beverage choice. In fact, an emerging body of credible scientific research suggests that coffee may have a preventative role in various diseases, including various cancers, diabetes and Parkinson’s’ disease to name a few. Coffee has four times the antioxidant content of green tea. The amount of antioxidants in coffee also surpasses that of cocoa, other herbal teas and red wine, and even fruit and fresh vegetables. And this is true of decaffeinated coffee as well. At less than 2 1/2 calories per cup, coffee is very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium. It is a good source of Pantothenic Acid, and a very good source of Riboflavin. In fact each cup of caffeinated coffee contains 11% of your daily Riboflavin requirement.

He noticed that the sheep became hyperactive after eating the red “cherries” from a certain plant. He tried a few, and was soon as overactive as his herd. Another legend gives us the name for coffee or “mocha.” An Arabian was banished to the desert with his followers to die of starvation. In desperation, they boiled and ate the fruit from an unknown plant. Not only did the broth save the exiles, but their survival was taken as a religious sign by the residents of the nearest town, Mocha. The plant and its beverage were named Mocha to honor this event.

Some Coffee History

Originally the coffee plant grew naturally in Ethiopia and was transplanted to Arabia where, for a time it was monopolized. Coffee was introduced much later to countries beyond Arabia whose inhabitants believed it to be a delicacy and guarded it as if it were top secret. At that time government forbade the transportation of the plant out of the Moslem nations. The actual spread of coffee was started illegally. Coffee today is grown and enjoyed worldwide, and is one of the few crops that small farmers in third-world countries can profitably export as evidenced by the Fair Trade beans imported, blended, roasted and sold by us Grab-A-Java.
